What is an anemone? Most times we find them in rockpools. When the tide is out some appear to be dark red jelly like things. When the tide is in or in the rockpools they are a squat tube body with tentacles sticking out at the top. Is it a plant or animal? In fact it is a primitive, predatory animal. Most sting their prey with their tentacles and then the tentacles move the food to the centre area - where the mouth is - and swallow it. Once inside the prey is dissolved and the rubbish expelled. The beadlet anemone is the most common in the rockpools, but the most spectacular one to be found is the snakelocks anemone, especially the one with green tentacles with purple tips. Anemones have a basal disc, which sucks onto the rocks, but it can move very slowly to another location. Be aware that some can also sting humans so take great care when touching them. |
