| A prawn has a hard shell and is difficult to see as it is virtually transparent apart from faint lines and spots that help it blend into its surroundings. It has five pairs of legs that it uses for walking and swimming. The first two pairs have small pincers on them to pick up food e.g. worms, seaweed, dead animal matter. Females can produce up to 2,500 eggs each, which hatch into plankton until developing into adults. Young prawns will moult every two weeks, which can take as little as 20 seconds! They are a favourite food of fish, anemones and cuttlefish. | |||||
