Turtles travel long distances to feed and nest, connecting many ecosystems of the ocean and land together.
There are seven different types of sea turtle; leatherback, loggerhead, green, hawksbill, Kemps’ Ridley, olive ridley and Australian flatback.
Six of these species - except for the Australian flatback - are listed as endangered and are therefore close to extinction.
An arribada is a mass nesting event when hundreds or thousands of turtles come up onto a beach to lay their eggs.
Threats to sea turtles include; industrial fishing gillnets and longlines, pollution, predators, poachers and development which destroys their nesting beaches.
