India lies in south Asia, between Pakistan, China and Nepal. To the north it is bordered by the Himalayas, the world's highest mountain chain. The country is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal in the east, the Arabian Sea to the west, and the Indian Ocean to the south. It is known as a "subcontinent", with an area of about 3.3 million square kilometers.

The capital of India is New Delhi, and the country’s largest cities are Mumbai (formerly Bombay), Delhi, and Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). It is the seventh largest country in the world while its population is one billion, making it the second most populous country after China.

India is mainly an agricultural country, though it also has a large iron and steel industry and produces every type of modern goods.

The temperature, and environment, of this huge land mass change drastically as you travel through the country. Likewise, the land itself changes; there are mountains and deserts, vast plains and tropical jungles.

With such a change in scenery, there is a huge range of animals living in India. Perhaps the most famous are the Asiatic elephants but there are also Bengal tigers, which feed on the deer, boars and water buffaloes.
