Austria is bordered by Slovenia and Italy in the South and by Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the West. Germany and the Czech Republic are its Northern neighbours while Slovakia and Hungary border it to the East. Its capital and by far its largest city is Vienna.
Austria is very mountainous, covering about three quarters of the eastern Alps. The country has many snowfields and snowcapped peaks, the highest being the Grossglockner (3,819 metres high). The Danube is the biggest river while forests and woodlands cover about two fifths of the land.
As you can imagine, Austria is famous for its skiing with a huge number of tourists visiting its snowy slopes and peaks. The Austrians make all sorts of vehicles and machines but overall the services industries, with a large banking sector, employ the most people.
Austria is found in a temperate zone with a climate influenced by the Atlantic. In other words it has the same seasons as us (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter) but, because of its mountains, there is a lot more snow and the winters are cold. This is very good for the tourists and the hotel trade.
Kaprun is one of the most popular resorts for skiers. Set at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier it offers an excellent range of skiing activities with guaranteed snow.
